3 Unit containers
3.1 Material and construction
3.1.1 Metal containers. Metal unit containers shall be made from tinplate not less than 0.30 mm thick, or from aluminium. NOTE The word “aluminium” is here used in the sense in which it is understood in the metal container manufacturing industry i.e. generally commercial purity (99 %) or a 1! % manganese alloy. The body of the container shall be seamless and there shall be a bead swaged round the body of the container immediately below the lid. The edges of lid and body shall be smooth. The lid shall be recessed to a depth of not less than 0.80 mm. The diameter of the recess at its root shall be sufficient to house a label 31 mm in diameter. If required by the purchaser, the lid may be coated with a matt white pigmented lacquer.
NOTE Attention is drawn to the fact that lacquering of tinplate containers will reduce the tendency to corrosion.
3.1.2 Plastics containers. Plastics unit containers shall not be brittle and shall be made from a suitable good quality moulding material, moulded to a good commercial standard. Any plasticizers used shall be of such character that they will be unlikely to cause deterioration of filmstrips left in the container for a period. The edges of lid and body shall be smooth. The lid shall be recessed to a depth of not less than 0.80 mm. The diameter of the recess at its root shall be sufficient to house a label 31 mm in diameter.
3.1.3 Paperboard containers. The paperboard unit container shall be of the round beaded shouldered style consisting of a box, lid and shoulder. The side walls of the box, lid and shoulder shall be made from 2 inner plies of pulp middles 190 g/m 2 and 1 outer ply of M.G. sulphite 71 g/m 2 . The box shall be beaded (diecurled) at one end only and shall have a disc made from 1-ply double white lined strawboard 1 200 g/m 2 securely fixed in the beaded end. The lid shall be beaded at one end only and shall have a disc made from 1-ply double white lined pasteboard 800 g/m 2 securely fixed in the beaded end.BS 2698 pdf download.
