1. Scope
This specification establishes qualification requirements for a resistance welding technician (RWT). It describes how qualifications are determined, and the practice by which qualification may be attained and maintained. The user of this specification will evaluate the qualifications of each individual, and provide examinations to test the individual's resistance welding skills and knowledge as well as his or her ability to apply the principles of resis-tance welding.
This specification is intended to supplement the mini-mum requirements of employers, codes, other standards,or documents, and shall not be construed as a preemption of the employer's responsibility for the work or for the performance of the work. Resistance welding processes include spot welding, projection welding, seam welding, butt welding, flash welding, micro joining, resistance brazing, resistance soldering, and resistance heating. It is understood that not all of these disciplines are used in every situation, and it shall be the responsibility of employers to determine that their employee, who, having qualified as a RWT, is capable of performing the specific duties involved in their career assignments.
8.1 Manufacturing. Each individual seeking qualifica-tion shall have experience consisting of the design, appli-cation, or operation of welding lines or cells for the manufacture of welded products such as automobiles, appliances, wire products, sheet metal products, or other resistance welded products.
8.2 Fabrication. Each individual seeking qualification shall have experience consisting of the design, applica-tion, or operation of welding facilities that fabricate welded products. Fabricated products may be covered by national, customer, or internal standards or specifications.
8.3 Research and Development. Each individual seek-ing qualification shall have experience consisting of research and development to enhance welded products or processes, welding materials, manufacturing, fabrication,or the design of welding manufacturing systems.
8.4 Training. Each individual seeking qualification shall have experience consisting of instructing courses in vari-ous resistance welding topics or related technologies.
9.1 Examination. Individuals seeking qualification as a RWT shall successfully complete a written examination, drawn from the educational background and knowledge given in Clause 7 and/or from a comprehensive resis-tance welding program, such as the Resistance Welding Manufacturing Alliance (RWMA) resistance welding school.
9.2 Passing Requirements. An examination structure is given in Clause 10 upon which the candidate shall obtain a composite score of not less than seventy percent (70%).
11. Maintenance of Qualification
