Sec.4.1 Materials
Materials shall comply with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and other federal regulations for potable water and wastewater systems as applicable.
Sec. 4.2 Physical Requirements
Sodium hydroxide is a compound commonly produced in the electrolytic manufacture of chlorine. In the anbydrous form, it is a white to slightly off-white, opaque or translucent solid that rapidly absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. Liquid sodium hydroxide is a solution of anhydrous sodium hydroxide and water.
Sec. 4.3 Chemical Requirements
4.3.1 Anbydrous sodium bydroxide. Anbydrous sodium bhydroxide sup- plied according to the provisions of this standard shall contain a minimum of 74.4percent total alkalinity as Na ,O, 96.0 percent sodium hydroxide as NaOH, and not more than 2 percent carbonate as NaCO3
4.3.2 Liquid sodium bhydroxide. Liquid sodium hydroxide supplied ac cording to the provisions of this standard shall contain approximately 50 percent sodium hydroxide (NaOH), unless the purchaser's specification requires approxi- mately 73, 25, or 20 percent NaOH.
4.4.1 General impurities. The sodium hydroxide supplied in accordance with this standard shall contain no soluble material or organic substances in quan- tities capable of producing deleterious or injurious efct on the health of those consuming a water that has been treated properly with the sodium hydroxide.
4.4.2 Product certifcations Sodium hydroxide is a direct additive used in the treatment of potable water. This material should be certifed as suitable for con- tact with or treatment of drinking water by an accredited certification organization in accordance with NSF/ANSI 60. Evaluation shall be accomplished in accordance with requirements that are no less restrictive than those listed in NSF/ANSI 60. Certifcation shall be accomplished by a certifcation organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute.
5.1.1 Sampling point. Samples shall be taken at the point of destination. A chain-of-custody form shall accompany all samples and shall be properly com- pleted by the individuals cllcting samples.
5.1.2 Precaution. Solid sodium hydroxide shall be sampled quickly, pref- erably when the atmosphere is not unually damp, and the sample shall be sealed as quickly as possible to avoid absorption of moisture and carbon dioxide from the surrounding air.AWWA B501 pdf download.
