5.1.2 Sampling precaution. Sampling of both dry and liquid potassium hydroxide should be conducted quickly, preferably when the atmosphere is not unusually damp. Te sample should be sealed as quickly as possible to avoid absorp- tion of moisture and carbon dioxide from the surrounding air.
5.1.3 Sampling procedures. Five percent of the packages shall be sampled; no sample shall be taken from a broken package. Solid potassium hydroxide shall be sampled by breaking of small pieces from the top, bottom, and sides of the pack- age at several locations and then crushing the pieces to sampling size.* Ground, fake, crystal, beaded, or prilled potassium hydroxide may be sampled by means of a sampling tube that is at least ¾ in. (20 mm) † in diameter.
5.1.4 Sample size and handling. Te gross dry sample, weighing at least 10 lb (4.5 kg), shall be crushed if necessary, mixed thoroughly, and carefully divided to provide four 1-lb (0.45-kg) samples. Te samples shall be sealed in airtight, moisture-proof glass or plastic containers resistant to KOH exposure. Each sample container shall be labeled to identify it, and the label shall be dated and signed by the sampler. A minimum of four samples shall be taken: one for testing by the purchaser, two for possible retesting, and one for referee laboratory testing. Appropriate chain of custody shall be maintained.
5.1.5 Absorption of moisture and carbon dioxide. Potassium hydroxide, both dry and liquid, must be mixed and sampled as rapidly as possible to avoid moisture and carbon dioxide absorption. Te sample should be stored in an air- tight, moisture-proof glass or plastic container resistant to KOH exposure. Any weighing of a sample should be conducted as rapidly as possible to avoid change in water and carbonate content.
5.1.6 Time of analysis. Laboratory examination of the sample shall be completed within seven days after receipt of the shipment.
5.1.7 Sample retention. Two samples of the liquid or dry material, as applicable, shall be retained for at least 30 days after the date of receipt for use by the supplier or the referee laboratory, if needed.AWWA B511 pdf download.
