The selection of materials is critical for potable water, wastewater and reclaimed water service, and distribution piping in locations where there is likeli- hood the pipe will be exposed to signifcant concentrations of pollutants composed of low-molecular-weight petroleum products or organic solvents or their vapors. Documented research has shown that pipe materials, such as polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride, and elastomers, such as those used in jointing gaskets and pack- ing glands, are subject to permeation by low-molecular-weight organic solvents or petroleum products. If a potable water, wastewater, or reclaimed water pipe must pass through such a contaminated area or an area subject to contamination, con- sult with the manufacturer regarding permeation of pipe walls, jointing materials, and so on, before selecting materials for use in that area.
4.2.1 Materials. Materials shall comply with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and other federal regulations for potable water, wastewater, and reclaimed water systems as applicable.
4.2.2 Body. A body is a split cylinder manufactured from carbon steel or stainless steel as described in sections that follow. Te body must be of sufcient width to fully enclose and seal both pipe ends. Steel bodies shall be formed from material that meets or exceeds the requirements of ASTM A36/A36M or ASTM A283/A283M, grade C, for carbon steel, or ASTM A240/A240M, type 304/304L, for stainless steel. Other grades of steel with equal or higher yield strengths may be used.
4.2.9.1 Similar materials. Similar materials shall be used for bolts, studs, nuts, and washers (when required) to minimize the possibility of galvanic corro- sion. Caution should be used in buried installations or where the environment is highly corrosive to ensure the bolts, studs, nuts, and washers (when required) are properly protected. Advice from a qualifed corrosion engineer is recommended.
Manufacturers shall provide bolts, studs, nuts, and washers (when required) of suitable quality and yield strength to ensure compatibility with the coupling design and rated pressure.AWWA C227-11 pdf download.
