Sec. 1.2 Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to provide the minimum requirements for reduced- wall, resilient-scated gate valves for water supply service, including appli- cation, materials, design, testing, inspection, rejection, marking, and shipping.
Sec. 1.3 Application
This standard can be referenced in specfcations for purchasing and recciving reduced-wall, resilint- seated gate valves for water supply service.
1.3.1 Stipulations. The stipulations of this standard apply when this document has been referenced and then only to reduced- wall, resilient-scated gate valves for water supply service.
1.3.2 Compatibility. The valves encompassed by this standard require considerations for compatibility with the material being conveyed from both chemical and physical perspectives. Wastewater implies a lack of control over its chemical and physical composition. Valves in compliance with this standard may be suitable for wastewater applications; however, compliance does not ensure man- ufacturer approval of a specific valve in wastewater applications. Suitability for a specific valve should be determined by analyzing a particular wastewater applica- tion in conjunction with the manufacturer.
4.2.1 General. Materials shall comply with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and other federal regulations for potable water and reclaimed water systems, as applicable.
4.2.2 Permeation. The selection of materials is critical for potable water, wastewater, and reclaimed water service and distribution piping in locations where there is likelihood that the pipe will be exposed to significant concentrations of pol- lutants composed of low- molecular-weight petrolcum products or organic solvents or their vapors. Research has documented that pipe materials such as polyethylene, polybutylene, polyvinyl chloride, and asbestos cement and clastomers, such as those used in jointing gaskets and packing glands, are subject to permeation by lower- molecular-weight organic solvents or petroleum products. If a potable water, wastc- water, or reclaimed water pipe must pass through such a contaminated area or an area subject to contamination, consult with the manufacturer regarding permeation of pipe walls, jointing materials, and so forth before slecting materials for use in that area.AWWA C515-15 pdf download.
