AWWA C909 pertains to molecularly oriented polyvinyl chloride (PVCO) pressure pipe that is manufactured from starting stock pipe made from ASTM D1784 cell class 12454 material. Te starting stock materials are then oriented through circumferential expansion to provide a hydrostatic design basis (HDB) of 7,100 psi (49.0 MPa). Te pipe is primarily intended for use in transporting potable water, wastewater, and reclaimed water in buried installations. Pipe outside diam- eters (ODs) conform to those established for ductile-iron (DI)-equivalent ODs (DIODs). Pressure classes range from 165 psi to 305 psi (1,140 kPa to 2,100 kPa) in sizes 4 in. (100 mm) and larger.
5. Hydrostatic design basis (HDB): Te categorized long-term strength in the circumferential or hoop direction as established from long-term pressure tests in accordance with ASTM D2837. Tis standard requires the use of PVC com- pounds that qualify for an HDB rating of 4,000 psi (27.58 MPa) and fnished pipe that qualifes for an HDB rating of 7,100 psi (49.0 MPa).
6. Hydrostatic design stress (HDS): Te maximum allowable working hoop stress in the pipe wall when the pipe is subjected to sustained long-term hydrostatic pressure. Te HDS in this standard is established by multiplying the HDB by the DF of 0.5.
7. Inspector: Te authorized representative of the purchaser who is entrusted with the inspection of products and production records. Te inspector also observes the production operations and quality-control tests to ensure products comply with the requirements of this standard and the purchaser.
10. Molecularly oriented polyvinyl chloride (PVCO) pressure pipe: PVCO pipe is PVC pressure pipe that attains a relatively high circumferential strength by reorienting the molecules. To create PVCO pipe, conventionally extruded PVC pipe is expanded circumferentially (for example, 4-in. diameter starting stock pipe is conventionally extruded; it is then heated and expanded to 8-in. diameter) using pressure and temperature. Te expansion reorients the PVC molecular structure in the hoop direction, thereby increasing the material strength in the hoop direction. Depending on the expansion process used, some longitudinal stretching is also possible.AWWA C909 pdf download.
