1 Scope
1.1 CAN CSA A123.2-03 deals with asphalt- coated roofing sheets composed of asphalt saturated organic felt coated on one or both sides with asphalt. Depending on their intended use, these sheets can have a coarse or a fine mineral surfacing.
1.2 In CSA Standards, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables are considered part of the table and may be written as requirements.
4.1 General
Asphalt-coated roofing sheets shall be manufactured by impregnating a single thickness of dry organic felt with an asphaltic saturant, then coating the felt on one or both sides with an asphaltic coating that shall be compounded with a fine mineral stabilizer substantially insoluble in water. Additional requirements shall depend on the type of roofing, as follows:
(a) Type M一mineral surface roofing: a single thickness of asphalt-saturated felt shall be coated on both sides with an asphaltic coating and entirely surfaced with mineral granules on the weather side. The sheet, however, may have a lapping edge that is not surfaced with mineral granules and is 51 or 102 mm (2 or 4 in) wide. The lapping edge may be coated with an asphaltic coating or left uncoated. The reverse side shall be surfaced with a suitable material to prevent sticking once the sheets are put up in rolls (see Clause 8.1).
(b) Type MC一wide selvage roofing: a single thickness of asphalt-saturated felt shall be coated on both sides with an asphaltic coating and surfaced on the weather side with mineral granules covering half the width of the sheet, less 25 mm (1 in). The weather- side portion not surfaced with mineral granules may be coated with an asphaltic coating or left uncoated. The reverse side shall be surfaced with a suitable material to prevent sticking in the roll. The material used as the parting agent shall not hinder proper adhesion in membrane construction.
(C) Type S一smooth surface roofing: a single thickness of asphalt-saturated felt shall be coated on both sides with an asphaltic coating, surfaced on both sides with fine mineral surfacing, and surfaced on one side with a suitable material to prevent sticking in the roll.
(d) Type CF一coated base sheet: a single thickness of asphalt-saturated felt shall be coated on either or both sides with an asphaltic coating, and surfaced with fine mineral surfacing on either or both sides. The material used as the parting agent shall not hinder proper adhesion in membrane construction.CAN CSA A123.2-03 pdf download.
