1.5 Portable fuel tanks which comply with this Standard shall not be acceptable if, when examined and tested, they are found to have additional features which reduce the safety standard contemplated.
Note: Products in substantial accord with this Standard but which exhibit minor differences from it may be deemed to meet the Standard providing it can be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the authority having jurisdiction, the intended user of the product, or the certification agency acting on their behalf, that these differences will not impair the suitability of the product for its intended purpose.
2.3 Stability
The bottom or base area of portable fuel tanks in their normal use position, shall have such relation to their height as to minimize accidental upset. This requirement can be deemed met when the tank does not upset when placed, facing any direction, on a plane inclined at 30° to the horizontal, irrespective of the quantity of petroleum fuel in the tank, when no pressure differential exists between the inside and the outside of the tank.
2.4 Handles
Portable fuel tanks shall be designed with provision for securely grasping and lifting the tank. Each such provision and its attachment to the tank shall be capable of withstanding the following test:The portable fuel tank shall be filled to nominal capacity with water and the closures secured. A fixed flexible steel rope 1-2 m (3-6 ft) long and of at least 6 mm (0.25 in) diameter shall be attached to the approximate mid-point of the handle, as illustrated in Figure 1, by 9-strand polypropylene rope of a nominal 8 mm (5/16 in) diameter, leaving 75 mm (3 in) of slack in the wire rope. The tank then shall be allowed to fall freely. One drop shall be made with each tank. The handle shall not break. The tank shall not leak when air tested in accordance with Clause 3.5.2. Three shall be tested; all shall pass.
2.9 Quick Disconnect
A quick disconnect fitting, which automatically shuts off the fuel flow from the tank when the fuel line is disconnected shall be correctly assembled onto each portable fuel tank assembly by the tank manufacturer. The fitting may be at either end of the fuel line, and the fuel line shall be provided with, and correctly attached to the tank when the only quick disconnect fitting is at the engine end. The tank assembly as shipped by its manufacturer shall be in a condition of immediate use with a specific engine without any refitting, except for a simple connection of 2 mating parts.
Note: For example, the fuel line assembly may be packaged separately from the tank assembly.CSA B306-M1977 pdf download.
