1.1 General
CSA B70.1-03 applies to frames and covers for maintenance holes and catchbasins.
1.2 In CSA Standards, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Legends to equations and figures are considered requirements.

3 Definitions
The following definitions and those of the National Plumbing Code of Canada apply in this Standard:Castings一grey and ductile iron maintenance hole frames and covers, and catchbasin frames and covers.
Ductile iron一cast iron in which the carbon not contained in pearlite is present in the form of spheroid graphitic carbon.
4 Frames and Covers
4.1 Material
Frames and covers for maintenance holes and catchbasins shall be made of either grey cast iron conforming to the requirements of ASTM A 48 Class 30 or ductile iron conforming to the requirements of ASTM A 536 Class 65-45-12.
The castings shall be produced by an established commercial method that provides adequate control over chemical and physical properties.
4.2 Dimensions
4.2.1 Minimum Design Load
All castings shall be capable of withstanding, without failure, a minimum ultimate limit state design load of 140 kN distributed over an area of 220 x 220 mm.
4.2.2 Side Play
Cover side play within the frame at the top surface of the maintenance hole frame shall not exceed 10 mm.
4.3 Finish
If painted, all surfaces shall be uniformly painted with one shop coat of asphalt- or tar-based black paint having a minimum softening point of 71 °C. All surfaces, joints, and crevices shall be thoroughly and evenly coated.
The coating shall be adherent, not brittle, and without a tendency to scale.CSA B70.1-03 pdf download.
