33.1 If routing or protection of wiring or both, as required by Clauses 12.3 to 12.5, cannot be determined by visual examination, the motor-compressor shall be subjected to a Vibration Test. Following vibration, the wiring or its supplementary protection, either of which is subject to possible damage, shall withstand, for 1 minute without breakdown, the application of a 60 Hz potential of 2500 V.
33.2 The motor-compressor sample shall be representative of production assemblies and may include an oil charge if one is provided at the time the motor-compressor leaves the manufacturer's plant. The test sample shall be provided with openings that allow observation and adjustment of the wiring, or its supplementary protection or both, during the vibration period. The sample shall be mounted on a base that will maintain the motor-compressor in its intended up-right position. Except that electrical connections are to remain intact, the wiring or its supplementary protection or both shall be arranged, as permitted by the design, so that it bears against any surface, edge, or part that it is likely to contact and thus cause abrasion. The wiring shall be allowed to move to its natural position during vibration.
33.3 The test apparatus shall consist of a vibration table that provides synchronous motion with a total displacement of 25.4 mm (1 in). This motion is to be circular in the vertical plane with the table level at all times. The test sample shall be positioned on the table but not secured in place except that it may be loosely restrained to limit the area of travel. The speed of the apparatus shall be adjusted so that the vibration frequency generates 1.6 mm (1/16 in) vertical displacement of the motor-compressor from the table.
33.4 During the test, the motor-compressor shall be rotated 90° from a previous position so that four positions of the sample are subjected to vibration, each for a period of 105 minutes. At each change of position, wiring or its supplementary protection shall be arranged in accordance with Clause 33.2, if necessary, and the speed of the test apparatus adjusted so that the motor-compressor is displaced as indicated in Clause 33.3. If, during the test, any internal springs or tubes break or come loose, the test shall be discontinued and a new sample tested.
33.5 After completion of vibration, dielectric voltage shall be applied in accordance with Clause 33.1 at points of possible abrasion. For wiring, the conductor and metal foil wrapped around the insulation surface are to be used as electrodes. For supplementary protection, such as sleeving, the electrodes are to consist of a conductor(s) inserted into the protective means and metal foil wrapped around its outer surface.CSA C22.2-No.140.2-96 pdf download.
