The selection of materials is critical for potable water, wastewater, and reclaimed water service and distribution piping systems in locations where there is likelihood the piping system will be exposed to significant concentrations of pollutants composed of low-molecular-weight petroleum products or organic solvents or their vapors. Documented research has shown that piping system materials, such as polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride, and elastomers used in gaskets and packing glands, are subject to permeation by low-molecular-weight organic solvents or petroleum products. If a potable water, wastewater, or reclaimed water piping system must pass through such a contaminated area or an area subject to contamination, consult the manufacturer regarding permeation of pipe walls, valve components, jointing materials, and other piping system components before selecting materials for use in that area.
4.2.3.1 Tapping flanges for steel tapping sleeves. Tapping flanges for steel fabricated tapping sleeves shall meet the material requirements of ANSI/ AWWA C207. Other material as specified by the purchaser may be used.
4.2.3.2 Tapping flanges for stainless-steel tapping sleeves. Tapping flanges for stainless-steel fabricated tapping sleeves shall meet the material requirements of ANSI/AWWA C228. Other materials as specified by the purchaser may be used.
4.2.3.3 Mechanical joint outlet connections. Mechanical joint outlet connections shall be compatible with ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11 or as specified by the purchaser. Provision for thrust restraint and angular deflection shall be considered when using a mechanical joint outlet connection.
4.2.4.1 Composition and physical requirements. Gaskets shall be molded or extruded natural or synthetic rubber free of porous areas and visible defects. Reclaimed rubber shall not be used. Unless otherwise specified, gaskets shall be suitable for water service to 150°F (65°C). 4.2.4.2 Gaskets for the body of tapping sleeves. Gaskets for the body of the tapping sleeve shall meet the requirements of ASTM D2000 and have, as a minimum, physical properties sufficient to satisfy the design requirements of Sec.
4.3.2. Gaskets needed for the body of the tapping sleeve shall have a minimum durometer of 50 and minimum tensile strength of 800 psi. Gaskets for flange connections shall conform to ANSI/AWWA C207.AWWA C223 pdf download.
