4.4 Test Specimens
4.4.1 Three spring hinges, one spring pivot set or one gravity pivot set shall be selected at random from the manufacturer's latest production run for the cycle, wear, closing force and latch tests as applicable.
4.4.2 The same three spring hinges or pivot set shall be used for the cycle, wear, closing force and latch tests as applicable.
4.4.3 An additional selection shall be made of three specimens for each finish test to be conducted.
4.4.4 Lubricants. Lubricants that have been applied during manufacture as a standard procedure are permitted, but lubricants shall not be added during the test.
5.TEST PROCEDURES
5.1 Before testing, each mounted and tensioned specimen shall be measured to determine any vertical or lateral clearance between leaves and knuckles. Measurements shall be taken at 45 degree travel of the door. Angle of opening shall be the same for final measurements as for original measurements within 2 degrees. Vertical measurement is between adjacent jamb leaf and door leaf knuckles. Lateral measurement is between inner edge of jamb leaf and adjacent door leaf knuckle. If this location is at the center of the hinge, one measurement at the center of the hinge will suffice. If this location is not at the center of the hinge, two measurements, equally distant from center of hinge shall be taken; the qualifying lateral measurement is the average of these two. For pivots, measure and record the vertical relationship between the top of the door and the adjacent header or reference point at the pivot axis with the door closed. Measure and record the lateral relationship of the door with the jamb at the top pivot point.
5.2 For hinges or pivots with adjustable spring force, adjust to provide a total closing force equal to or greater than the minimum given for the hinges or pivots in 5.2.1. The manufacturer's recommended adjustment procedures shall be used. For non- adjustable spring hinges or pivots, the closing force shall equal or exceed the minimum values shown in 5.2.1. (See 6.1)
6.1.1 Prior to the start of the cycle test 6.2, draw a line on the floor parallel to the door in the 45 degree±2 degrees open position.
6.1.2 Conduct the closing force test at the beginning of the cycle test. Test: Open the door to the 45 degree mark on the floor, and position the force gage to contact the door at 30 inches (762 mm) from the pivot axis.
6.1.3 In the case of spring hinges, the manufacturer shall elect to achieve the required closing force with a minimum of two or all three of the hinges being tested and shall clearly indicate the number of hinges required to be tensioned to meet the value specified.BHMA A156-17 pdf download.
