BS 3735:1987 pdf download.Plastics and rubber dustbin lids.
1 Scope
This British Standard specifies requirements for dustbin lids manufactured from polymeric
compounds of thermoplastics or rubber or a combination of both, suitable for use with dustbins
which comply with BS 4998 or, in the case of low carbon (mild steel) dustbins, which comply with
BS 792.
NOTE The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover.
2 Definitions
For the purposes of this British Standard, the following definitions apply.
2.1 thermoplastics
a plastics material capable of being repeatably
softened by heat and hardened by cooling
2.2 rubber
a solid material with elastic properties made from
latex from living plants or synthetically
3 Classification
Thermoplastics and rubber dustbin lids are classified as follows:
Type 1: clipped lid;
Type 2: unclipped lid;
Type 3: heavy duty.
4 Material
The material from which the lid is produced shall be a polymeric compound of thermoplastics or rubber or a combination of both.
5 Mass
The minimum mass of the lid shall be:
Type 1: 0.50 kg;
Type 2: 0.55 kg;
Type 3: 2.00 kg.
6 Design requirements
6.1 The lid shall be round with both the inside and outside surfaces smooth and free from flashes and shall have no sharp edges.
6.2 The lid shall be provided with either:
a) a handle having a grip of not less than 80 mm in length with a clear unobstructed projection of not less than 25 mm, the gripping part of which shall be radiused all round to eliminate sharp corners or edges; or
b) a handle having a length of not less than 80 mm and a solid projection of not less than 25 mm. Where the lid is designed to lift off the bin, the grip/handle shall be centrally situated.
6.3 The lid top shall be convex with no cavities which would prevent the drainage of water. The lid shall be so designed as to remain secure when the dustbin is tilted at an angle of 45, without the assistance of attachments or clips. Where the lid enters or overlaps the bin body for which it is designed it shall have a minimum entry or overlap height of 30 mm, with a maximum radial clearance of 10 mm diametral.
7 Performance
7.1 Impact strength When tested in accordance with the method described in Appendix A, the lid shall show no splitting. Subsequent to this test the lid shall meet the requirements specified in 6.3.
7.2 Deformation resistance When tested in accordance with the method described in Appendix B, the lid shall show no splitting or permanent deformation. Subsequent to this test the lid shall meet the requirements specified in 6.3.
8 Marking Each lid shall be clearly and permanently marked with the following: a) number and date of this British Standard, i.e. BS 3735:1987); b) size (diameter) and type of lid; c) manufacturer's name and identification. NOTE Unless otherwise specified, the lid should be clearly and permanently marked with the wording“NO HOT ASHES".BS 3735 pdf download.
