5 Physical requirements
Shingles shall be tested as they are manufactured or as agreed upon between the purchaser/user and the manufacturer/supplier. They shall conform to the physical requirements specified in Table 1. The weather surface of a shingle shall be tested as a single layer and shall comply with the requirements of Table 1. For laminated shingles, fastener pull-through resistance shall be tested with the nail positioned in accordance with the manufacturer's application instructions. For overlay shingles, both weather surface areas of the shingle shall be tested and shall comply with the requirements of Table 1.
7 Sampling
Note: The sampling method described in this Clause is based primarily on ASTM D228. Any variations between this Standard and ASTM D228 have been introduced because this Standard specifies some test methods that are not included in ASTM D228.
7.1 Sample selection
7.1.1.The bundles selected in accordance with this Clause or as agreed upon between the purchaser/user and the manufacturer/supplier constitute the representative sample used for subsequent observations and tests. A sample shall be defined as a minimum of five bundles. The bundles shall be randomly selected from the lot.
Note: If the bundle sample selection is not a minimum of five bundles randomly selected, it is important that the sample selection method be reported.
7.1.2 From the samples selected in accordance with Clause 7.1.1, the individual net mass and the average net mass shall be determined in g/m2 (Ib/100 ft2) in accordance with Clauses 7.2.3 and 7.2.4.
7.2 Mass and area determinations
7.2.1 Net mass
To determine the net mass, each bundle shall be opened, any loose surfacing and tab cut-outs shall be shaken off, the wrapper shall be discarded, and only the shingles in the bundle shall be weighed.
7.2.2 Dimensions of shingles and shingle count
The number of shingles in each bundle shall be counted and recorded. Two shingles from each of the five bundles shall be randomly selected. The width, length, and cut-out dimensions for each shingle shall be measured and recorded.
8.2 Tear strength
Ten specimens, each from a different shingle, shall be tested. The average tear strength of the test specimens shall comply with the Table 1 requirements for tear strength when tested in accordance with ASTM D228. The specimens shall be tested perpendicular to the long dimension of the shingle, with the granule side facing away from the knife. It is preferable to obtain the test specimens for this test method from the weather surface of the shingle specimen. If there is insufficient material, the test specimens may be cut from the unexposed area. If the test specimens are obtained from the unexposed area, this shall be noted in the test report.
Note: Specimens are tested in the direction paralll to the cross-machine direction of the reinforcement.CSA A123.5-16 pdf download.
