ASME Y14.38a-2002 pdf download.ABBREVIATIONS AND ACRONYMS.
3 BASIC PRINCIPLES
3.1 Abbreviations for Acronyms Sections 5 and 6 include some acronyms for com- pound terms as well as abbreviations for the acronyms. Some examples are: ”radar” for “radio detection and ranging” and “rdr” for “radar;” “selsyn” for “self- synchronous” and “sels” for “selsyn.”
3.2 Punctuation An abbreviation spelling a whole word should include a period if the abbreviation could be misinterpreted.
3.3 Spacing Spaces shall not be inserted within an abbreviation. 3.4 Capitalization Abbreviations included in the “Drawings” column of section 5, provide the form for use on drawings and documents produced in upper case characters. The abbreviations in the “Text” column provide the form required for lower case characters. However, these abbreviations may be capitalized when required for emphasis. Abbreviations that are capitalized in the “Text” column are a continuation of prior usage and in general are abbreviations for major systems or are recognized as having significant application when used in text. Abbreviations are not listed in the column for many short words. If space limitations make it necessary to abbreviate such terms, the abbreviation that appears in the “Drawings” column shall be used except for substitution of lower case letters.
3.7 Combining Forms Where two abbreviations are listed for the same word such as “cath” for “cathode” and “c” for “cathode,” as in “cathode ray tube, (comb form),” the first abbrevia- tion applies to the word used alone. The abbreviation indicated “(comb form)” applies in combination with abbreviations of other words to form an abbreviation for a word combination such as CRT for Cathode Ray Tube.
3.8 Colors Two abbreviations are listed in sections 5 and 6 for color name. The three-letter abbreviation is preferred for notes on drawings and in text. The other abbreviation is used where a shorter designation for colors is needed.
3.9 New Abbreviations The development of a new abbreviation will be considered for inclusion in this Standard based on the following minimum criteria: (a) A genuine need for the abbreviation has been demonstrated. (b) The abbreviation does not contain subscripts and superscripts. (c) The term to be abbreviated should be five or more letters. (d) The abbreviation does not duplicate abbreviations defined or established in other standards. (e) The abbreviation meets the intent of the scope of this Standard. (f) The term to be abbreviated would have wide- spread application.ASME Y14.38a pdf download.
