7.3.3.1 Use of Field Logbook
Field logbooks are used to document site activities and facilitate integrating the results into the Phase II ESA report. The sequentially numbered pages of the logbook should contain entries that are tracked by date and time. Logbook entries shall include, but not be limited to
(a) names of personnel performing the sampling or measuring;
(b) times of personnel arrival and departure and initialization and conclusion of the component sampling or measuring efforts;
(C) results of field measurements;
(d) factual descriptions of structures and features;
(e) sketches of the property layout and sample or measurement collection locations;
(f) weather conditions; and
(g) visitors and third-party enquiries.
7.3.3.2 Use of Photography
If permitted by the Client, photographs may be taken to document sampling activities and the conditions on the site. The photographs may document
(a) site conditions;
(b) environmental conditions; and
(C) neighbouring land use.
All photographs shall be dated and logged.
7.3.3.3 Limitations and Deviations
During implementation of a sampling plan, conditions may be discovered that require deviations from the plan. In such circumstances, the Assessor shall record the nature of the conditions, including those posed by physical limitations (e.g., access denied, inaccessible areas, and safety considerations not previously noted). Where adjustments to the sampling plan are required, the Assessor shall seek the Client's permission prior to conducting additional work. The deviation and the rationale for the deviation shall be documented. Discussions with the Client and regulatory agencies could be necessary to decide how to respond to deviations.
7.4 Sample Shipment and Analysis
7.4.1 General
Proper QA/QC procedures shall be followed throughout the handling, shipment, and analysis of samples.If samples of matrices are collected, the chain-of-custody procedures described in the sampling plan shall be followed to ensure that the samples are analyzed for the appropriate parameters, that all samples sent to the laboratory are actually received by the laboratory, and that the samples are analyzed within the prescribed holding times. Depending on the type of analysis being conducted, sample analysis could require several days or weeks.
Typically, chemical analysis is not done by the Assessor who performs the Phase II ESA. Although the Assessor is responsible for including quality control and quality assurance tests in the workplan, the chemical testing is usually done by another entity, outside the control of the Assessor. Chemical analyses shall be performed only by certified/accredited laboratories that are accredited for each type of analysis being undertaken.CAN CSA Z769-00 pdf download.
